14.04 upgrade display driver missing on Acer AMD64 laptop

Bug Description

After flawless upgrade from 12.04 on Acer laptop with AMD 64-bit processor display has only generic 1024x768 mode. lspci does list ATI Radeon HD 3200 controller, but aticonfig has error "No supported adapter detected", and AMD Catalyst Control Center in Settings reports initialization error. Also, at boot "unable to detect WMID device" message comes up

Your GPU is no longer supported by fglrx/Catalyst. Use the default open-source driver. Duplicate issue of: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1058040

As for acer-wmi message, it is a duplicate of this bug report (which contains a wrokaround): https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1262797
