In Kubuntu Plasma 5 i386 the problem is solved.
Now I can see the file /usr/share/dbus-1/system-services/org.kde.powerdevil.backlighthelper.service. This file was absent in the previous images, I think this was the cause.
Apparently it was a packaging issue, at least in my case.

In amd64 the issue is solved too. I think this bug can be closed.

I'm using kubuntu 14.04 with the neon ppa, and I can confirm this is still an issue.

If I reboot, things return to normal for a while, then after 15 mins the CPU usage is back up to 100%.

I'm also using amd64, and the file is present:

org.kde.powerdevil.backlighthelper.service

But kded5 is still eating CPU.

David,

I think is another reason, not powerdevil. In my case the kded5 was using a 100% CPU since the start, and the file org.kde.powerdevil.backlighthelper.service solved the problem.

When kded5 is sucking CPU like a crazy, do:
1-ps aux | grep kded5 (grab the pid)
2-sudo gdb --pid ${pid of the process here}
3-thread apply all bt

And attach the output.
