Bug Description

Ubuntu 14.10 r203

1. Wait until software updates are available.
2. Navigate to the System Settings main screen, and scroll down to the "Updates" icon.

What you see: The "Updates" icon appears identically to when there are no updates.

What you should see: The "Updates" icon has a badge showing the number of updates.

Matthew, the description seems similar to bug #1362518 and mentionning a badge where the title isn't, is there a copy error?

This report makes me wonder why we have an updates option at all, when an update is available it is indicated 1) in the notification list 2) as a badge on the app icon in the launcher and 3) toward the top of the main settings panel. When is there a case where I need to check? Since we don't maintain any update history to view, seems redundant at best.

That's a good question. However, opening the Updates section is the only way to trigger a manual check for updates. It's also likely that we will indeed have updates history in future.

I just got confused by this too, when I noticed a "1" badge on the settings icon in the launcher. When I tap on the settings icon, it takes me to the settings app as expected, but there is absolutely no visual indication as to what the "1" badge is for. Whatever the badge(s) on the launcher icon apply to should also be shown in the settings app itself, with the badge on the relevant icon where I need to take action. Otherwise, there is no way for me to know what the badge alert is trying to tell me.
