To add context, the future version this will be deprecated in is MySQL 5.7. From http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.7/en/mysql-nutshell.html :

The --key-buffer option must now be specified as --key-buffer-size.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

Let's also track this in mysql-5.6 since we want to switch my.cnf over to that source package.

5.5 superceded in >= Vivid => Won't Fix. Fixed in 5.6. Could be SRU'd if bundled in with some other updates, so no objection to bug tasks for specific stable releases.
