Bug Description

Testing lp:inkscape r13529 on Ubuntu Utopic...

libgtk2.0-dev 2.24.24
libgtkmm-2.4-dev 2.24.4

The preferences dialog, by default, opens with all widgets at minimum height. See screenshot.

The changes to enforce floating dialog behavior for the preferences dialog (r13262) IIRC made the initial state even less usable (with new preferences). Affects desktops / themes with minimal slider lengths for scrollbars more than others.

I'd like to add to this bug report:

It also happens (or still happens?) in Inkscape 0.91 on MacOS 10.9.5. See attached screenshot. After the preferences dialog is resized once, retains its size. Only the initial size is too small.

The dialog should always have a usable (dynamically calculated) size now while also still being shrinkable down to the minimum size.

I'll also investigate if this can be back-ported to 0.92.x

Backported a modified version to 0.92.x in

It's not as nice as the version committed to master but it should work well enough.
Please let me know if this causes any issues so I can have another look before the 0.92.3 release if necessary.
