calendar doesn't sync if opened before signing into accounts

fresh/wiped phone
1) open calendar app
2) open system settings, sign into google
3) select to sync calendar as a sync'd item in settings
doesn't sync

but if i quit the calendar app & reopen, syncing begins

Also doesn't sync with activated google calendar:

1) Calendar <email address hidden> checked/activated
2) Close Calendar app and reopen it
3) NO entries are display
4) Go to calendars on uncheck <email address hidden>
5) Go back to the main screen ("no calendars active")
6) Go to calendars an check <email address hidden>
7) Entries are displayed again

For me, the syncing does not work at all.
E5, OTA9
Syncing worked, but stopped some "updates" ago. Re-enabling Google calendar account does not seem to have any positive effect.
