Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.17 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

bug exists in kernels up to 3.16.0-11. 3.17.0rc2 fixed the issue.

My report https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1358647/comments/4 was premature. The bug is not appearing if I pm-suspend the machine, but entering sleep mode by itself caused the crash again.

emk2203, let the scope of this report only focus on "entering sleep mode by itself", with the pm-suspend being a WORKAROUND to this.

Hence, was this reproducible in a release prior to Utopic?

Not sure, because the laptop never slept by itself, just monitor in energy save. Sleep is only forced by lid down or pm-suspend.

tl;dr: unsure

emk2203, the laptop was released fairly recently (mid-2013), so let us put that aside for now. Lastly, could you please test the latest mainline kernel via http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.17-rc3-utopic/ and advise to the results?

Due to a hardware failure, Ubuntu was restored on the SSD of the machine instead of a native install on USB media. Suspend/resume now work properly.
