Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-10-generic

Framebuffer consoles do not work since gutsy. If vga=xyz is specified, Alt+F1-F6 consoles are all black. uslpash works, but console login is not possible.

It reproduces on all Systems i have tested so far. (from an old AMD Thunderbird 1Ghz Desktop PC to a brand new 2Ghz SantaRosa Based Notebook)
Note that all System share the fact that they have an nvidia graphics card (from FX5200 to 8600GM), i currently don't have anything else to test on.

Interrestingly the framebuffer on the Alternate CD seems to work, on the LiveCD and an installed System it does not.

Tested with Gutsy Tribe 5

This is exactly what I also found. Works in alternative CD but not in installed system.

I reproduced this on a very old system (Celeron 400) with trident graphic card so it should not be nvidia graphic card specific.

I also have this problem, on an Intel 915GM graphics chip. Framebuffer works fine without vga=, but with it, just blackness. Xorg still works fine at full resolution.

I can confirm this bug on Gutsy. I'm using a nividia FX5700 with nvidia driver. It seems that the fbcon module is not loaded by initramfs. If I load it by hand (sudo modprobe fbcon) the vga console works again.

Changed in linux-source-2.6.22:
status: New → Confirmed

Forum thread on this issue: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3331275

Adding fbcon to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules as suggested in the thread fixes it for me.

I can confirm that adding fbcon works with setting vga=791 on my HP tx1000 laptop.

Adding fbcon no longer working after today's kernel update from 2.6.22-12 to 2.6.22-13. fbcon is loaded (confirmed via lsmod), but framebuffer is broken.

Adding fbcon to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules does not solve the problem for me. Running 2.6.22-14-generic.

I can NOT confirm the proposed fix. Adding fbcon to initramfs modules list does not help. Using an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, Gutsy generic kernel.

Same problem here on an ATI Mobility firegl T2, adding fbcon to initramfs list did not help.

Same here, on 2.6.22-14-generic, with Gutsy (7.10) 32bit version.

(Intel 915GAV, Pentium 4 3.0 GHz)

No solution proposed in the thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3331275 works here.
(Doing a 'sudo modprobe vesafb' after boot leads to blotches of colour in the virtual consoles.)

I would like to mention a known bug in the "intel" driver that prevents virtual terminals: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.22/+bug/135613

I have an intel card and my virtual terminals / tty-s (CTRL-ALT-F1-6) don't work. Changing the the "vesa" driver makes them work!

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!
