ops, attached now, I think I spotted a bug in LP when I opened two bugs at the same time with attached two files...
Anyway I recreated from by utopic pbuilder environment and added the bug reference.

Attached the new debdiff, with the .la files removed and merged against -0.4 version (so dropping the autoreconf ubuntu delta)

Thanks, do we still need that Ubuntu delta? The comment suggests that the syntax should be working on current Ubuntu versions...

If the delta was used to fix a FTBFS yes, it can be dropped. I tested a plain sync build and it succeeeded

I tested a straight-up sid version build on utopic amd64 and i386. Built and installed without a hitch. I'm patch piloting so I'll syncpackage it.

This bug was fixed in the package libidl - 0.8.14-0.4

libidl (0.8.14-0.3) unstable; urgency=low

  * Non-maintainer upload.
  * Replace libidl-config by a wrapper for pkg-config.
  * Add corresponding dependency on pkg-config.
  * Drop .la files.
  * Switch to multiarch. Closes: #641614.
    + Set libdir accordingly.
    + Update installation paths.
    + Make both packages MA: same.
    + Depend on cpp:any.
