Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

I am using EXA (will post my xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log and such) and using the unpatched server (bug 126425). Changing from the old 6.6.193 to the new 6.7.191 driver and nothing else causes compiz to be dead slow. skimming thru the log I don't see anything wrong.

Does restricting the maximum virtual size using

I had
Virtual 2048 2048
for a bit, (think i read it on think-wiki) and it did not change anything. I will install the 6.7 driver again and try sometime soon and report back with it set at 1400 1050

Thomas: have you tried to limit the maximum virtual space as suggested by upstream?

not yet, been pretty busy lately, I know it will only take a min, but it's pretty low right now on my priorities, might tinker with it later tonight.

Yes, that fixed it for me, thanks!

So the default maximum virtual size seems to use up too much video RAM for you.

I've reduced the default sizes in git a bit. I haven't had a chance to look into any alternative options yet.

Tried it, and it worked, and I let upstream know.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. In the development cycle for Intrepid there have been some vast improvements in the open source ati video driver and we could use your help testing them. Could you please download the latest Alpha CD image of Intrepid and test this particular bug just using the Live CD? You can find the latest image at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Your testing can help make Ubuntu and the open source ati driver even better! Thanks in advance.

The fix for this was released a while ago. Closing as fixed. Feel free to reopen if the problem continues to exist in Intrepid or newer releases.
