Bug Description

Gutsy Tribe 5 can't properly drive the soundcard of my laptop (HP DV6560EL, Intel HDA ICH8)

It didn't work with kernel 2.6.22-9, and now it doesn't even with the latest 2.6.22-10.30.

The laptop chipset is quite recent, so possibly this is related to oldish ALSA drivers in the kernel.

I think we possibly have two different problems, here... my audio never worked, not with 2.6.22-9 nor with -10 (and definitely not with Feisty, which was the reason for me to try with Gutsy).

But I've read recent bug reports of some other people claiming broken audio after upgrading from 2.6.22-9 to -10.

The reason for my audio not working is probably related to a newer audio chip (I'm thinking to that "Realtek ID 268" I've got from tail -2 /proc/asound/oss/sndstat); well, newer than the related ALSA drivers, that is.

If you issue that command, do you get the same chip ID?

thanks

Hi,

(sorry about the delay in replying)

I disagree: this bug is _not_ a duplicate of bug #134146.

The difference being that my audio hardware _never_ worked with Gutsy
(tried Tribe 4 and 5), whilst bug 134146 is basically reporting an
audio breakage when upgrading from kernel 2.6.22-9 to 2.6.22-10.

The reason for my audio not working is that the audio chipset Realtek
ALC268 (Intel HDA ICH8 family) is not supported by the latest ALSA
release yet.

It does work, though, with the ALSA development version (ALSA-HG) since
about mid-August.

At the moment there's a lot of confusion about Intel HDA audio problems
with Gutsy: most people reporting audio problems are actually using
chipsets based on the intel ICH7 family (which _is_ supported by ALSA),
while there's a growing number of people - like me - using the newest
ICH8 family, sporting that Realtek ALC268 chip, which unfortunately is
not officially supported by the ALSA drivers.

thanks

imo, the duplicate status is wrong, sound worked for me in Feisty, doesnt work in Gutsy (tried Tribe 5 and beta). snd-hda-intel driver simply is missing after a fresh install.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!
