Bug Description

Whenever I want to play a cd (origals) , I only get a very distorted sound.
I was able to play CD's untill a few weeks ago.

I am able to play sound which is on my harddisk or from an internetstream and play video from the cdrom.

Steps to reproduce:
-------------------------

1) Insert an audio CD in the CD-Rom,
2) automatically sound juicer starts,
3) either rip or play directly and you get distorted sound.

* No error messages are thrown
* The sound files are distorted with every program.

These is an excerpt from the dmesg log concerning sound (so far I know)

Hi,

I'm currently using Ubuntu 7.10 (although downloading 8.04 while I'm
writing to you). Until today the problem is unresolved.

Kind Regards.

One suggestion as to tentative expected return and risk is to use the
observed return and risk for some period of the past. I believe that
better methods, which take into account more information, can be found.
I believe that what is needed is essentially a "probabilistic"
reformulation of security analysis. I wi]l not pursue this subject here,
for this is "another story." It is a story of which I have read only the
first page of the first chapter.

It does also fail to playback with other mediaplayers such as rhythmbox,
xmms or the standard cd player, although I'm able to play music which I
retrieve from other computers in the network with these applications.

I have the same problem, though no messages in dmesg. CD sound is slightly to very distorted depending on volume and music style. Other audio (e.g. mp3s) plays fine. Maybe it's got something to do with the way of playback (analogue vs. digital)? I'll see if I can find anything on the subject.

Ok, I have to partially retract the previous comment. Rhytmbox distorts output, but some other players do not. Also, playing an internet radio stream also gives distorted sound, so there must be something else going on.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it without more information. As this sounds like a general audio problem (affecting multiple programs, ogg and internet streams) please include the information requested from the "Reporting Sound Bugs" section of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems as separate attachments. Additionally, please let us know what version of Ubuntu you are using.
