You use a German locale--do you use multiple keyboard layouts? As in bug 1338324, there is a conflict between Ctrl+Space (which I cannot confirm) as an XFCE shortcut and NBSP, which looks like it can be changed in Keyboard settings. If that is the case, this report is duplicate. I have described a couple other workarounds there.

No, i do not use multiple keyboard layouts.
I checked this again and tell you the options:
ibus was active and i set it to "automatic".
Maybe this change things...

double-no, no changes at all!

I tested some other otions, like
- Ctrl+f = search
- Shift-Ctrl+f = bold
and these work as expected.

Ok, searching"xfce ctrl space" or "ubuntu ctrl space" one case that others have found this to be an issue is with IBus. See the links for description and workaround.

Okay, Chris, a big thanks for this!

I found it and just deleted the pre-installed XFCE combo and now it works.

Nevertheless, such shortcut key combos should work without touching the system in this way.
It is not beginner friendly nor a good behavior that it works dependent on the program which is active...

I've just figured out that I am unable to insert non-breaking spaces (CTRL-SHIFT-SPACE) any more in LibreOffice Writer because CTRL+SPACE now switches between keyboard layouts.

I consider this very unlucky, not only because non-breaking spaces, but also because many developer tools use CTRL-SPACE as function completion or similar.

We need a different default setup. Maybe classic windows ALT-SHIFT is offering itself - or is there any problem with that?

Yes, there are workarounds, indeed... But why not to stick with a multiplatform standard? I believe CTRL+SHIFT+SPACE is used on most systems for non-breaking space...
