mpeg-1 playback does not work

Binary package hint: totem

I have a DVD containing amongst other things the file "event.mpg" which can also be downloaded from http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~ijackson/bikecams/links/2007-08-13-Taxi-event.mpg (this file has md5sum 77b6266489a03424a5714698e51b977e and I have checked that the file on the DVD can be read and is identical). The file is an MPEG-1 video with stereo audio track.

If I double-click on this file (after installing gutsy i386 20070823 d-i) totem opens, and I'm then diverted into the codec search. After I have installed gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly, I'm briefly left looking at a black totem window and then totem closes. Attempting to view the video by double-clicking on the file again shows a totem window with a black video pane, as before, which then closes straight away.

Thank you for your, I've just tried on a desktop CD and it works as expected for me. Totem opens the gnome-app-install dialog and lists the ugly, ffmpeg and fluendo plugins as options to install. I clicked to install the first one, acknowledged that universe needs to be used and the video is playing fine after installation. Could you run totem on a command line, try to play the video and note anything printed there? Does "gst-launch-0.10 playbin uri=file:///path/to/video" play it correctly?

I turned compiz off with
  System / Preferences / Appearance / Desktop Effects / (*) None
and it works now for both mpeg-1 (bug 134271) and ogg (bug 134272).

I have an Intel 865 motherboard with onboard graphics.
