Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

Is this the correct package? I have not installed any extra windows management packages, just the default 'Desktop Effects'.

Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) with nVidia GeForce Go 7400

If I enable 'Normal Effects' everything seems to be fine with nvidia-glx enabled. The desktop 'blinks' and everything works fine.
If I then enable 'Extra Effects it still looks fine and works great (no crashes yet).

But when I reboot the machine while 'Normal Effects' is enabled, the desktop comes up with no windows borders. To get the borders back I have to switch to '
No Effects'. From there I can go through the whole process again.

To me this looks like my card is supported but something is not being loaded during boot-up?

Thanks for your bugreport.

Could you please attach ~/.xsession-errors here after a boot without window decorations?

Thanks,
 Michael

please also run:
$ gconftool --get /apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/active_plugins
and attach the output here.

Thanks,

Does manually running 'gtk-window-decorator --replace' work?

Travis, indeed! That makes it look normal. Maybe I should add that to my session startup

well, 'gtk-window-decorator --replace' did not work for me (with up-to-date gutsy). Also, gnome-terminal and tooltip popups are just white boxes when I enable 'Visual Efects'

when i tried to run this command
gtk-window-decorator --replace
i found that the package compiz-gnome is not installed !!!
however, after installing that package, the decoration for compiz works fine.
but there is another problem the preferences button does not work before and after this solution.

Same problem with Gutsy full updated.
I solved this installing compiz-gnome. Why is not installed by default?

@AboSamoor: Tks for the tip :)

I had the same problem with preference button, I solved after reinstall compizconfig-settings-manager

I have the same problem (no window decorations and the terminal is just white) with the release-version of gutsy (on a 6600GT and the "nvidia"-driver).

compiz-gnome is installed and doesn't help.
gtk-window-decorator --replace doesn't help either (but since the terminal is just white I can't see if there's any error output).

I had the same problem and I've solved it just by setting in appearance preferences no effects and then again resetting extra effects.

I solved it by deleting my xorg.conf and letting X write a new one with "X -configure". I think my old was just too customized.

I've got this problem in Hardy, and none of the above suggestion have fixed it.

I even tried dpkg -P all of the compiz packages, and re-installing, to no effect.

I found a solution, for me: see bug 154596 for details.

The procedure there, of adding "AddARGBGLXVisuals" to xorg.conf fixes the problem for me.

Hi,

my system is a laptop with nvidia driver (looking forward to having an open-source alternative to their drivers).

i am having the same problem of not having window decoration.
after modifying my xorg.conf according to suggestions posted earlier i still had the problem.

but i have used this command:
sudo ln -sf /usr/lib/nvidia/libwfb.so.xserver-xorg-core /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libwfb.so
and it appears to have solved the problem.

this suggestion comes from this website:

Thanks
