Bug Description

This is my re-reporting of bug #1283938, after it was downgraded and the specifics of the tested fix did not apply to me. We were encouraged to re-report.

On a fresh installation of Xubuntu 14.04 (64 bit) on my Toshiba Latitude L755 laptop, when I close the lid, the screen shuts off (as would be expected). When I open it again, it gives me the chance to log in as though the screen was locked. After typing my password and hitting enter or clicking through to continue, the screen blanks and the computer cannot be awakened. Restarting is necessary.

I have seen others report this using Unity desktop as well. My personal experience is that LXDE (installed after the fresh Xubuntu install as an attempt at a work-around) is unaffected by this bug. I have been affected since my initial 14.04 install in April and updates have not altered it.

Fix in #1303736 does not work. Perhaps not a duplicate?

This report is most likely a duplicate, because the unlock screen is visible after opening the lid. Does suspending the system via logout dialog also trigger the black screen?

No, suspending via the system dialog results in normal behavior.
