Bug Description

Since the AutoDj should act like a real DJ it may support to use the volume sliders instead of the cross fader as an alternative.
This would allow also allow to build a cross fader less skin. An streamlines the use of the orientation buttons in a four deck setup.

Instead of having a mode, why not switch AutoDJ to use the volume faders instead of the crossfader completely?

Benefits:
1) Usable in external mixer mode.
2) Doesn't interfere with 4-deck support.

I would be happy to switch to faders-only.

(the proper algorithm is probably to fade new track all the way up and then the old track all the way down -- that would match the typical crossfader behavior).

And before you ask, no we should not try to mimic the crossfader's curve setting!

The Auto Dj should act like Real DJ and should jump in when required. The Real DJ should be able take control when ever required.
This requires that the Auto DJ uses the same Mixing style as the real DJ.

So I am afraid we need a preference option for this. I am a two Deck DJ an I would really miss a Cross-fader mode fro Auto DJ.

no. no preference for this. pick one.

Can we autodetect the DJ style? How do you set the deck orientation when using the volume slider to fade the decks?
The Auto DJ should use the x fader if it is on the left or the right when Auto DJ is about to fade.

no. I think the original plan of using the volume faders is the right one because that also lets us fade out decks three and four, which is a feature we need to have.

You can fade out deck 3 and 4 via the volume slider and than lat Auto DJ do his normal work with the Xfader.

IMHO it should still be possible to use deck 3 and 4 manually, while Auto DJ works with deck 1 + 2.

You have not answered how do you set your deck orientation in a four deck skin.

if you use
1+3 left and 2+4 right.
Auto DJ can kick in without using the volume slider

if you use
1left and 2right.
3+4 center.

Auto Dj can fade out 3 + 4 via volume slider and the use th x fader for 1 + 2

If all decks are connected to center bus, Auto DJ can just use the volume sliders.

You see, no extra preference option. Even if we would have this it is almost redundant, since Auto DJ cannot work in x-fade mode if all decks are in center mode. On the other hand it cannot work in volume mode if the decks are orientated left and right and the xfader is on left or right.

I think switching to volume slider mode is a very prominent change we should consider carefully.
We had no complains about this, except one forum entry, where we discussed about external mixes.
There is also no technical reason for not continue using x-fader, it is just a personal preference.

I had a GSoC Project with Auto DJ and merging this is still a pending task for me I had planed to do in 1.13.

This includes fade now buttons one each X-Fader side to start x-Fading including the desired transition effect even when no Auto-DJ is active. I would like to keep this feature.

I use AutoDJ with a 4 deck controller without a crossfader (Allen & Heath Xone K2). For this use case, I want AutoDJ to control the volume faders of decks 1 + 2. I want to leave decks 3 + 4 free for previewing albums to add to the AutoDJ queue without interrupting the flow of the queue, so I want AutoDJ to leave decks 3 + 4 alone. Currently this is possible by assigning deck 1 to the left side, deck 2 to the right, and unassigning decks 3 + 4 from the crossfader. This is clunky though because I cannot control the crossfader from my controller. Also, the crossfader assignment is not persistent across restarts (that could be changed easily, but I'm not sure that should be done and that's another discussion which I don't want to get into here).
