hp-clean not loading paper & printing on HP deskjet 1510 printer

I've got a little bit of a dilemma with a HP deskjet printer I have running on my computer which runs Ubuntu 10.10,the printer prints good through the HP device manager otherwise but when I select "clean cartridges" the paper doesn't load up ,as if the printer isn't getting a signal to load the paper but the printer still tries to print even though there is no paper loaded into the printer.
I have tried running hp-check from the terminal but the problem is still there, I have also tried running hp-doctor and commands such as that to check for any missing dependencies but all the required dependencies are there and hp-doctor doesn't record any faults in its diagnosis.
My thinking is one of the script files required to instruct the printer on what to do has a bug of some sort in it, I know 10.10 is an old distro but the cartridge cleaning utility is the only function which doesn't work, what I need to know is what script sends instructions to the printer for the cartridge cleaning utility,and where is it located?
I have a separate folder designated for HP printer drivers and I downloaded the 3.13.8 & 3.14.6 tarballs and they both have the same problem, I unpacked them with the terminal.
Also can someone give me some insight such as what should be in that script which instructs the printer on what to do?
