     - Add watch file.
     - Drop dh templates from debian/rules.
     - Drop config.guess stuff from debian/rules.
     - Drop debian/info (info already present in rules file).
     - Bump Standard-Version to 3.8.2 (no further changes).
     - Bump Compat-Version to 5.

Version 1.8 is out now! Please update, since there are major improvements.

Changes in version 1.6:
* A major code reorganization has been undertaken.
* This version skips faster over damaged areas after two consecutive
errors have been encountered.
* A new pass has been added that trims error areas backward before splitting.
* Support for sparse writes to the output file has been added.
* Blocks longer than sector size are now split at sector boundaries.
* The new option "--fill" has been added.
* The new chapter "Fill Mode" has been added to the manual.
* A "current status" line has been added to the logfile.
* This version can resume an interrupted retry pass instead of reinitiating it.
* This version achieves perfect resumability if interrupted during trimming or splitting.
* Handle also SIGHUP and SIGTERM (like SIGINT) to allow clean interrupt on connection loss or system shutdown.
* The "--quiet" option also quiets error messages.
* Print a more informative error message when reading an old logfile.
* A note has been added to the manual about old logfiles.
* Consistency checks have been added to detect possible bugs.

Changes in version 1.7:
* This version skips very fast over damaged areas.
* This version maintains the logfile minimized at all times, improving efficiency.
* The error count now shows the number of error areas found, irrespective of their sizes.
* When splitting, this version jumps to the next non-split area after two consecutive errors have been encountered in the current one.
* Target "check" has been added to Makefile.
* The new option "--retrim" has been added.

Changes in version 1.8:
  * The new option "--generate-logfile" has been added.
  * The new option "--synchronous" has been added.
  * Fill mode now works when outfile offset differs from 0.
  * The chapter "Fill Mode" of the manual has been updated.

Than you very much. Could you put your updated package into official Ubuntu universe repositories?

Can we please get an NMU in Debian?

Actually, hm. I suspect debian-forensics is responsible for this, I'll ask them.

Ubuntu doesn't seem to support raw devices very well any more (fair enough, as they were deprecated quite a while ago), so versions of gddrescue that don't support direct disk access are now a bit useless, as that functionality is supposed to replace the raw device support in gddrescue.

Also note that GNU mirrors don't keep any versions before 1.6 around any more; 1.2 really is obsolete now.

Maybe the importance of this bug should be upgraded, as a major feature of the application is now effectively broken?

There is a debian update going through the mentor process:

With any luck it'll get through soon and we can get a MOTU to simply sync from that

If you want that, you have to file for a SRU:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

I've built some (untested) backports in my ppa, if you want: https://edge.launchpad.net/~stefanor/+archive/ppa/+packages
