Bug Description

Hi,
on my new Acer TravelMate P253 notebook with Ubuntu 14.04 desktop, the touchpad is working OK for normal operations (moving and tapping), but it never scrolls when I slide vertically on its right side (where two arrows clearly show that it should scroll there).
Thank you for any suggestion.
Adalberto

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.15 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Hi Joseph,
sorry but the upstream 3.15.0 kernel did not fix this issue: the touchpad scroller still doesn't work anyway.
I should now add the tag "kernel-bug-exists-upstream" as per your instructions, but I don't actually know how... sorry!

Adalberto, could you please test the latest mainline kernel via http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.16-rc1-utopic/ and advise to the results?

Hi Christopher,
the 3.16rc1 kernel fixed the issue! Now the touchpad scroller works fine, it just is inverse: going UP with my finger causes the screen to scroll DOWN, like the behaviour you get on touchscreens, so maybe it's intentional indeed...
So thank you a lot!
If someone please explains me how to close a bug, I'll be glad to close it myself!

Adalberto, the next step is to fully reverse commit bisect the kernel in order to identify the fix commit. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#How_do_I_reverse_bisect_the_upstream_kernel.3F ?

Adalberto (adaca) wrote :

Hi Christopher,
sorry but doing bisection I found this is not a bug, but rather some misconfiguration with the default ubuntu desktop system settings whose I fixed with some random modification of the flags in the "Mouse and Touchpad" system settings applet.
My other bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1330640) is instead a real bug, so I'm now carrying on kernel bisection for it.
Please do follow my other bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1330640) and again excuse me for causing troubles here.
Please close this bug, or I'll just convert it to a question...
