Bug Description

The touchpad is irresponsive but sometimes just throuws the pointer to some edge of sceen if you try to move it. There is no clicking action either.

I am using a usb mouse and it performs as expected ususally. In some ocassions the pointer's clicking functionality seems to get stuck at some window feature like ( menu bar, content space, some button, titile bar etc) . It moves properly but the clicking action is performed only in that region and nowhere else on scree. Once that area is clicked/right clikd again, it goes back to normal functioning. In a few ocassions when I could not detect where it is stuck I had to reboot the system and then it worked fine. I have notices that this problem generally starts if I have suspended the system.

I have tried updating the BIOS to the latest version but it did ot have any different effect.

xinput list output , I have the usb mouse connected:

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.15 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Anubhav Chaturvedi, could you please test the latest mainline kernel via http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.16-rc1-utopic/ and advise to the results?

As well, did this problem not occur in a release prior to Trusty?

Hi Christopher,

The new kernel does not even start as it is unable to connect to the mouse.
It shows the following error:
psmouse serio4 : Failed to enable mouse on isa0060/serio4

As of now I have I have tested the following kernels:
linux-image-3.15.0-031500-generic_3.15.0-031500.201406131105_amd64.deb
linux-image-3.15.0-031500rc2-generic_3.15.0-031500rc2.201404201435_amd64.deb
linux-image-3.16.0-031600rc1-generic_3.16.0-031600rc1.201406160035_amd64.deb

I had tried Ubuntu 13.04 earlier via Live CD (USB) and the same problem was there as well.

A temporary fix has been reported by Hans and i am attaching his comment on the other thread. Thanks a lot Hans. I hope we can fix this bug permanently soon.

Hi,

Fixing this is non trivial, supporting these new touchpads likely needs a signicant amount of work (for details see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1110011 ).

In the mean time, I can provide a workaround which should make the touchpad work in ps/2 mouse emulation mode (so no 2 finger scrolling, etc.), and stop it from interfering with an external mouse.

Sounds good? Try booting with "psmouse.proto=bare" on the kernel cmdline.

See: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBootParameters for how to add a parameter to the kernel commandline.

Regards,

Hans
