Bug Description

Sometimes when starting Ubuntu 14.04 after hibernation, networking is disabled. Checking "Enable Networking" has no effect.

This is the output of apt-cache policy network-manager:

OK, I will try the BIOS update. But something strange happened, the hibernate option disappeared completely! It's no longer in the menu in the top right corner, or the options that appear when pressing the power button. I think it might be caused by the last updates from Ubuntu.

I updated the BIOS successfully, and this is the output of sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date:

S551LB.212
04/25/2014
But I still have the problem of missing hibernate option.

Karim Sonbol, hibernate disappearing from the top right corner is a different bug for a different report, which you are welcome to file a new report about.

Focusing on this report's scope of "Networking disabled when starting from hibernation" are you able to successfully hibernate via a terminal:
sudo pm-hibernate

sudo pm-hibernate doesn't work. It shut down the device but after starting it again and choosing Ubuntu from the grub menu, I got a black screen with a strange colored bar at the bottom. I had to turn it off manually by pressing the power button. Starting again, it logged into the system normally, without remembering any previously-open applications of course.

I created another bug report for the problem of hibernate option disappearing, here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1327648

Karim Sonbol, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (the one all the way at the top, and not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.15-rc8

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

I installed the latest mainline version, but it didn't appear in the boot menu. I installed this file:

Sorry, I didn't choose 'Advanced options for Ubuntu' the first time. Anyway, I installed the latest mainline kernel like you said. (v3.15-utopic)
sudo pm-hibernate now works! However, it didn't ask me for my username and password after waking from hibernation. I don't know if this is a new feature or a bug.
Can I keep using this kernel? I mean, will it be stable?

Karim Sonbol, the next step is to fully reverse commit bisect the kernel in order to identify the fix commit. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#How_do_I_reverse_bisect_the_upstream_kernel.3F ?

Regarding using the mainline kernel please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds#Kernel.2BAC8-FAQ.2BAC8-DebuggingMainlineBuildsSupport.Does_the_kernel_team_support_the_mainline_kernel_builds.3F .

Strangely enough, hibernation through sudo pm-hibernate is working properly on my original kernel version: '3.13.0-29-generic'! The original problem of networking disabled after hibernation haven't occurred yet, but like I said it only happens "Sometimes". I will try hibernation for some more time and let you know how it goes.

Till now, I haven't had the problem of Networking disabled again. So, I guess it's fixed now :)
