Bug Description

Not sure where to report this, but there are some odd "Ubuntu issues with many apps". I invoked Ubuntu-bug on "octave" since its the most recent app I've tried that has this issue, but changed the package to "I don't know" in the web bug-interface.

1 - Applications often start with no menu/title bar. They are not maximized. Sometimes changing the size of the window by dragging a window edge will give me a title bar.

2 - Even when a title bar is visible, it may only show the title and the menus won't open. I click around like mad and eventually the menu may start working. Its very intermittent.

3 - Tear-off menus never work. This has been reported seperately for Gimp. When the menus are torn off, they don't work anymore. Gvim used to have tear-off menus, but I can't find out where to turn them on! Gnome-tweak tool (and other gnome apps have a transparent background making them very tough to use).

Sorry these are all posted in one spot, but I think they are related. If I'm wrong - I'll try posting them seperately, but I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one having these problems!

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and trying to help make Ubuntu better. However, reporting a bug against Octave is almost certainly the wrong way to report "issues with many apps". A better choice might have been Unity if that's the desktop environment you are using.

Nevertheless, I will take some time to look at your problem and try to at least help you figure out how and where to properly report this, and make sure that it actually is not a problem in Octave.

As a first step, can you provide one or more screenshots, either of a particular application like Octave or Gvim or of your entire desktop with applications running, that show the problems that you are describing with menus and title bars?

OK - I have the screenshot and some more information.

It doesn't always seem to happen, its random. However, if I remove the .config/octave directory and make it think it hasn't been run before, then its consistent. I also found out that the title/menu bar is there, but its under the desktops; ie. moving the window with ALT-F7 is all that's required.

The screenshot you reqquested is attached.

Thanks for the screenshot. I see what you're describing as no title bar.

And I agree with your description. The initial size of the Octave window is too tall to fit on your display. It's not maximized, but it is taller than the height of the screen minus the Unity bar at the top. It just so happens I am on a laptop and can reproduce what you're seeing exactly. You can also use Alt and drag to move a window without its title bar, and once it is moved down, you can see that the title bar is in fact there.

I also see menu bars there in the Unity bar at the top as expected, nothing wrong with the menus as far as I can see.

So if anything needs to be fixed in Octave, it could be a request to make the initial size no taller than the height of the display. Would that resolve this bug report for you?

I can't comment on tear-off menus, there are none in Octave, and I don't use them in other programs.

Here is the bug I was reporting! I found the bug popping up again and thought, "OK, I'll just move the window". And clearly, moving the window didn't help! I changed the desktop background to something lighter so you can see there is no title bar.

We posted at the same time .. Check the screenshot of Octave again - its not too tall. Its the position. There is just enough space for the title-bar. Its the position that is off.

Tear-off menus in Gimp is shown - it shows on the window status bar what it is, but doesn't open the dialog. In Gvim, I can't tear them off at all.

You're right, the height is correct but the position of the window is underneath the Unity bar. This is almost certainly a bug in Unity, not in Octave, since Octave is setting the right height, and I have not seen this happen in other desktop environments.

This may be the same as bug #1166132. Reassigning to unity.
