Bug Description

Suspend and hibernate functions no longer work after upgrade to Linux Mint 17 i686

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 which had Linux Mint 16 (Petra) 32 bit

The commands pm-suspend and pm-hibernate would work fine, with no quirks.

Whilst on Mint 16, the system was updated using update manager. I then changed my repo entried so I could upgrade to
Mint 17 via the command line.

After the upgrade was completed I rebooted the system, and all work was working fine. The system booted into Cinnamon with no issues.

Then I try hibernate from the desktop. After a while the screen goes black and the power light is flashing. The only was to around the issue to is power down and reboot the system

The same symptoms happen when trying suspend. This happens from command line or from GUI

The problem happens consistently.

The only clue I have is the following entry in syslog (which may or may not be related)

I have the exact same laptop and it works fine. You are supposed to reinstall when upgrading, not do an in place upgrade by switching repos.

I also have a clean installation of Mint 17, 64-bit, Cinnamon and the suspend and power off functions do not work.

Screen goes black with small icon in center screen but computer keeps running and unable to regain control and have to use hardware power button or reset button to regain control.

The screen saver works but the STR function does not.

I have not been able find a solution to the problem - most frustrating for what is otherwise a great OS.

If you have a Dell 1525, make sure your BIOS is flashed to the most recent version. I noticed the poster's BIOS was out of date. If you have a different computer altogether, it may be different. May need to reset and/or play with power and suspend related BIOS settings as well.

For suspend to work consistently I close all applications and then press suspend button.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 with a clean install of the Mint 17 XFCE spin and will experience the inability to resume from a suspend about 80% of the time.
Tried 3 different Kernels with no difference (two 3.13 versions & the 3.15 kernel) .
Mint 15 works OK on the same laptop.
Unfortunatly it seems that Kernels above 3.4 tend to be more problematic during resumes from standby on older hardware.
Since this is on my wife's laptop experimenting with the OS involves swapping out the HD only at night. :-(

Anyone on Mint 17 experiencing this, please check the contents of the file '/etc/systemd/logind.conf'

It should contain this: http://pastebin.com/WJu3E6sC

If it doesn't, this could be contributing to issues that are described here. You can try to fix it by editing this file using something like:

sudo gedit /etc/systemd/logind.conf (you'll need to enter your login password)

If you want to make a backup first,

cp /etc/systemd/logind.conf ~/logind.conf.bak

This file not being as I linked is caused by using upgrade/update paths other than the update manager. The upstream maintainer wishes to update this particular file to some new set of defaults, which are not the same as our desired configuration. If you end up answering incorrectly during the upgrade process, you can end up with the pure upstream file, which doesn't match Mint's intended configuration.

I'm not guaranteeing this will fix any or all issues here, but it's certainly something to check.
