Bug Description

In reference to bug # 2304568, lost launcher and panel in 14.04LTS Beta2,

I ended up sending the motherboard for repairs. This has been repaired and installed as of today. I also installed a brand new 120GB SSD upon which I installed a newly downloaded version od 14.04LTS. I kept my /home on another drive, but for that it is essentially a new installation. System started, asked for password and at that time the panel was visible with date, time and the shutdown button. After entering password system came up without launcher and also without panel. I changed density on the screen just incase launcher was off the screen, no luck.

This now has become a serious problem, as I cannot acces any of the files on my hard diks, nor can I use this system for any work.

I also do not know how I can send any bug info other than this description, I have no access to Terminal, only "all settings" is available and all icons do their job when requested.

I would really appreciate it if this were looked in quickly.

This may sound impertinent, but I have been hanging on this for over a month, that time includes repairs to the motherboard.

Almost a full day has gone by, and nobody has even bothered to respond to this to me major problem.

I do have access to a command line, all I need is the required commands to start Unity and keep it running.

Is that too much to ask for?

Yes, very much so, there is one question, 258578 and a bug report 1399302, both describe in detail what happened after an upgrade in place from 14.04 LTS to 14.10.

Subsequently I rebuilt a system from 10.04 LTS through two upgrades and ended up with 14.04.1 LTS and I have neither panel nor launcher. Since the reinstallation and now in 14.04.1 LTS a kernell upgrade happened and no change.

The system works, everything I installed is OK but I can only use a Gnome desktop, which is all right, but not as useful as Unity..

This is an ongoing problem on this Dell Vostro laptop wit AMD processor and video.

A resolution would most definetely be welcome.

I will provide any and all info that would or could help.

I created a "standard" user and the unity shown is similar to booting a test drive from a USB stick or CD, that is a purple background and a small list of launch icons

All functions such as NFS are available, however when I tried to start an existing VirtualBox, a new one was suggseted.
All this seems correct.

What you mean?

So with a recently created user Unity works fine?

Revision history for this message
ealthuis (ealthuis) wrote :

Yes

I use VirtualBox in the administrator account, and the new user has no access to that (no permissions) which is correct

Upon your suggestion I created a user, that user gets Unity every time that user logs in.

Probably there is something wrong in the configurations files in your home. Can you try to login in your administrator account (using unity) than switch to a tty (alt+ctlr+1), login in, run the command unity --replace?

What do you get?

ealthuis (ealthuis) wrote :

I logged in to Unity, as admin, and tried tty, There is no response to the keyboard, thi=us I did not get c command line.

I did log in under Gnome, executed the command as suggested, I have a whole list of installation in Terminal , do you want to see that? I saved it for the next post

Result:
I logged into Unity as admin, no Unity, no response to either mouse clicks, no response to keyboard entry
I shut down, by holding the start button
I logged in under Gnome, everything is available and works
Iterminated Gnome and restarted
Logged in as user, Unity is there and everything works.

I tend to agree that there is a problem with configuration, The disk activity at startup suggests that Unity is being loaded, it justdsoes not show on the monitor. In fact the screenis completely mute, as I said no response at all.

I now have a complete Unity screen including panel with all the icons.

I do believe that the "--replace" above did not finish as indicated in the terminal listing above, Which might be the reason i cannot find the unity log.

Terminal hung after the last line: "Starting plugin: unityshell"

System seems a bit sluggish, also I could not change the screen background.

ealthuis (ealthuis) wrote :

There are some parts missing in this Unity, one is that I cannot shut down apps such as Firefox and Thunderbird, also the shutdown button does not respond until I move the pointer to the extreme left top, then all 4 workspaces appear and when I move the pointer to an icon in the launcher the previous app goes away, one workspace appears and the other app starts.

I ran "config --replace >unity.log" again with the same result as above.

So we are not finished yet.

Try to remove the directory ~/.config/compiz-1 or something similar. Sorry but when there are this kind of configuration issue is hard to debug the issue without direct access. Also usually it's not our fault, but of the upgrader or other external tools.

Did it help?

Revision history for this message
ealthuis (ealthuis) wrote :

No that did not help.

The problem with mouse clicks remains, also clicking the touch pad is not responded to. This is within Unity, in an app clicking works Ok i.e Firefox or VirtualBox etc.

I also cannot change the appearance even though the appearance app shows the new background.

As far as I know these are the only (smaller) problems left to deal with.
