So default should now be either /dev/cdrom or /dev/sr0

I am not sure what you mean. Are you saying that in the Preferences you cannot select /dev/dvd as the default optical device? I am able to select it in gnome-mplayer 1.0.9 (Ubuntu 14.10).

The bug is simple - gnome-mplayer needs to default to /dev/sr0 or if desired it's symlink , /dev/cdrom
