Grafic mode crashes when switching to terminal

Bug Description

I have ubuntu with Xcfe as desktop manager.
When i try to switch from grafic mode to terminal by pressing, for example ctrl+alt+f1, the computer reboot and lead me to the login for the graphic mode. Only now i can go to the terminal by pressing again ctrl+alt+f1!if i press ctrl+alt+f1 again the computer reboot and so on!what's going on? yesterday it was all ok, today there is the problem, but i have not done any system change!
The problem remain if i shutdown the computer!

I've just installed Xubuntu 7.10 on a old HP Pavilion 6730, and I'm encountering the exact same problem. It seems to be related to the video card. When I switch from its native driver (i810) to a generic driver, the terminal works. but now, I have to use that lousy screen resolution...
