Bug Description

I have Problems when i boot my Laptop with Ubuntu 14.04. The same Problem occured on older Ubuntu Versions (12.04 to 14.04) as well as on Kubuntu and other Ubuntu derivates (e.g. Mint). When i first installed Ubuntu it worked perfectly fine for 1 or two days, but then it refuses to boot. If i try to boot from USB as well as from HDD in rescure mod, it shows:
"
[0.345596] perf_event_intel : CPUID marked event: 'bus cycles' unavailable
[0.345664] ... version: 3

"

these are only the last lines, the others seem irrelevant to me.
I use a Intel Core i 5 430M, 4GB RAM with an ATI mobility radeon HD5650
It's a Acer Travelmate 5740G
It has a different HDD (not sure which i put in it) and i upgraded the BIOS which is now an InsydeH2O V1.23.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

we need some more information. From a terminal window please run:

sudo apport-collect 1315829

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.15 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I can test it but i have to install a new system (which isn't a big deal cause i already saved all important things) but then it could take a couple of days until i can reproduce the error (or i see that is it fixed) cause i'm not sure how to trigger the bug. Or is there a possibilty to anything via grub(which i have access to).

Marius, please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:
apport-collect 1315829
When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Christopher, unfortunately i don't have access to any kind of terminal on the affected Laptop because it does not boot but it stops during the process.

Marius, one may execute it in a live environment, or on one of the boots when the problem doesn't occur.

Well the problem is, it does never boot. However i will try to boot via USB but when i tried it before it happened that the booting process from USB stopped at the same point as the regular system as i mentioned in my original post.

Marius, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (the one all the way at the top, and not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.15-rc8

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

I also receive this issue.
It was booting fine on Ubuntu 14.10 and I did a dist-upgrade. Following the dist-upgrade, Ubuntu would fail to boot. When entering recovery mode, I found the boot froze on the exact same lines as in the OP.

I have a core i5-520m and a Radeon 5650M.

I tested kernel 3.13.0.24.28 kernel and 3.15.0.6.7 (latest linux-generic on utopic) and both had the same result.

Note: On a fresh install it will be working and these are the lines that follow (where it usually freezes):
"
NMI watchdog: enabled on all CPUs, permanently consumes one hw-PMU counter.
 #2 #3
 x86: Booted up 1 node, 4 CPUs
smpboot: Total of 4 processors activated (19159.92 BogoMIPS)
"

After upgrading software packages in Ubuntu (but not changing the kernel at all), these lines will never be reached.

Sacha Refshauge, thank you for your comment. So your hardware and problem may be tracked, could you please file a new report with Ubuntu by executing the following in a terminal while booted into the default Ubuntu kernel (not a mainline one) via:
ubuntu-bug linux
