Bug Description

The machine just freezes in my Unity session, sometimes after minutes, sometimes after some hours.
Any audio is running about ten minutes longer before the machine either reboots or Xorg is reloaded. Happens daily since updating to 14.04. I cannot change to different terminals to manually reload Xorg, the machine is blocked once the screen freezes.

Trying to report the problem via aport-gtk yields an error upon upload:

Apr 29 23:05:09 m whoopsie[1380]: Could not upload; processing later (/var/crash/_usr_bin_Xorg.0.crash).
Sometimes I do see the aport-UI after logging in to my unity session, but the screen disappears and my unity session is loaded 1 second later.

_usr_bin_Xorg.0.crash contains the actual crash, while the automatically added stuff just shows the system after a reboot after the SIGABRT happened.

The problem seems to be connected to unity. If I run a KDE session I wasn't able to reproduce the problem, but unity just freezes after running a while without me actively doing anything with the box (audio was running).

Not sure what else I can provide to give more hints. Is it a hardware problem with the graphics card or a bug in X/noveau?

The problem still remains active.

After 2014-05-25 I switched to proprietary nvidia 331.38 for my GT218 [GeForce 210] graphics card and did not experience any more machine freezes and display hickups.

Just yesterday I switched back to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau and experienced the screen and machine freeze just now - relevant output from dmesg is:

Trying to switch back to nvidia seems to not have worked correctly, thus noveau is loaded as fallback and the machine just froze again.

Hi hugohirsch,

Since a moth (July 2015) I am having the same problem. (Up to now everything worked pretty well,...4 years)
Randomly the Ubuntu freezes ( no ctr+atl+F1 or ssh) works). completely frozen.
Sometimes takes 1 hr sometimes 10 minutes.

I am not sure if it is because the graphics driver.
I tried, gnome3, unity, firefox and epiphany or even just with a gnome-terminal , I have a steelseries 6GV2 keyboard ( I changed it by the original, but also gets frozen),

when playing with the windows suddenly the CPU fan starts to rise its speed and Ubuntu freezes. Sometimes the fan is kept at hogh rate others at low.
It happens in a ACER PC intel i5 with nvidia GT 215 [geforce 320][av2]
I have ubuntu in a labtop with radeon card and it works well.

It is quite annoying.
If somebody could help would be fantastic.
Regards

p.s. From a time to now many people is experiencing such problems.

HugoHirsch, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is manually attached.

Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. First, execute at a terminal:
cd /var/crash && sudo rm * ; sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y upgrade && sudo service apport start force_start=1

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. Now reproduce the crash, then open a terminal, navigate to your /var/crash directory and file your report with:
sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash

where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. By default, this sends the crash to the Ubuntu Error Tracker infrastructure, which is different than Launchpad. For more on this, please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ErrorTracker .

However, if after doing this you would still like to have a crash report posted to Launchpad, for example to ease triage and add others to your report, one would need to open the following file via a terminal:
sudo nano /etc/apport/crashdb.conf

and comment out the line:
'problem_types': ['Bug', 'Package'],

by changing it to:
# 'problem_types': ['Bug', 'Package'],

Save, close, and try to file the crash report again via:
sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash

I'm closing this report since the process outlined above will deal with this issue more efficiently. Also, please do not attach your crash report manually to this report and reopen it. Thank you for your understanding.
