Bug Description

Using a desktop with two users, it often hangs switching from one to another. The console comes unresponsive, even text-only (ctrl-alt-f2) does not show. System itself still runs, I can login over SSH. Process for Xorg shows one full cpu used.

The system came up from hybernate, the graphical display showed password entry for other user, the switch towared the one user showed the password entry for the one user. After entering the password the display turns black, with ctrl-alt-f2 not responding either.

Via ssh I can produce the following: (3-core cpu):

I think I'm using an external driver for the videocard:
ii fglrx 2:13.350.1-0ubuntu2 amd64 Video driver for the AMD graphics accelerators
ii fglrx-amdcccle 2:13.350.1-0ubuntu2 amd64 Catalyst Control Center for the AMD graphics accelerators

I'm quite sure this problem affects me as well. Unfortunately my linux knowledge seems insufficient to track this problem down properly so I can only add some observations since upgrading my workstation to 14.04LTS :

* arbitrarily the load jumps from normal (between 0 and 3 during standard desktop workstation operations) to exactly 15 but(!) without really slowing the system down except for delays when switching users or trying to log in or out. This often (but not exclusively) happens after resuming from a lock screen.

* iostats yields NO write/read load during high load

* top yiels NO task excessively or exclusively consuming any CPU

* there are no network shares mounted

* a reboot solves this problem for several hours again.

* shutdown hangs on Askingh all remaining processes to terminate - No error is shown but I have to hard-reset the pc. (as far as I can see after unmounting all filesystems - I had no fs problems regarding this issue so far)

After weeks of being unable to track down the problem it seems to have disappeared for me. Since it was not reproducable and the load was not connected to any task I can only guess if it's been fixed by a regular update or if it's related to my deinstallation of the "virtualbox" package, although virtualbox was never run while the problem occured.

Unscientific Conclusion: If you have weird load problems as of 14.04 and the virtualbox package installed: Try if deinstalling helps. I'm sorry I can't add anything more substantial to this.

This happens me too.

Always reproducible, steps:
a) start computer
b) verify that Xorg is using some 0.7% CPU
c) lock the screen
d) login back
-> Xorg uses 97 ... 105% CPU
Wait over ten minutes and it will not cool down.
('sudo killall Xorg' helps)

-----
Step c) could be suspend/hibernate too, because they implies screen locking.
-----
Also changing to the tty (i.e. ctrl-alt-f1) triggers xorg to use ~100% CPU.
----
Virtualbox mentioned earlier: I have virtualbox installed, but not running ('lsmod | grep vbox' gives hits).

Gerben, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg 1313275

Please ensure you have xdiagnose installed, and that you click the Yes button for attaching additional debugging information. As well, please note given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.
