Ubuntu fails to wake up from suspend when closing laptop lid

Bug Description

Using 14.04 with Gnome, when I close my laptop lid and then open it, the screen is black (though on) and I cannot access my desktop.

Same problem with 14.04, Gnome-session 3.9.90 running on DELL Precision M4500. Details in settings about the graphic card says : Gallium 0.4 on NVA5

Turns out that if I lock the screen manually and then shut the lid, it goes to sleep and wakes up correctly, so my guess is there is some issue with the lock screen not being initialised properly when I don't do this?
