vlc does not play video from afp share

When trying to play a video from a mounted share, I get : Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'afp://<email address hidden>/downloads/some_home_made.avi'. Check the log for details.

The default "Video player" has no issues opening the file, just playback is darn slow.

There are no plans to add AFP support to VLC on Linux, at least not until the Linux kernel itself supports AFP natively (which I think it does not).

I was not aware that VLC does not use the running file manager somehow to
play a file.
So how is connection to a SMB share done?
From a user point of view, it very unlogical that the file manager
(nautilus in this case) shows file on the share and that it is not possible
to play files.
I will double check if this happens for all files, maybe it works for some.
At the moment of the issue I found that SMplayer was not working either and
the default video player was.

While VLC has some limited support for the SMB protocol, we recommend mounting the file system locally. Since Linux does not support AFP, VLC does not support AFP.

If you mount the AFP share via GVFS, it should work just fine in VLC (and if it fails, it's more likely a bug in GVFS). Regarding native support of AFP in VLC, I think nobody is really interested.
