it is not available ,

1) disabled by the graphic driver
2) your HDMI TV EDID not valid

A system update and reboot seems to have fixed the issue for me.

There is another issue with ALC892 that causes a "headphones" output to flash in sound settings. The workaround is to actually connect headphones to the subwoofer jack and the "headphone" output will disappear. The fact that I had headphones connected to the subwoofer jack when I rebooted might also be the reason it worked.

Hello Raymond,

Does the above not sound familiar or at least simular to my issue? See #1249705

As I have stated many times, there is an issue with 13.10 and now apparently inherited/passed on to 14.04.

I just went from a complete working 12.10 Quantal to 14.04 via 13.10 and now the HDMI audio is gone again.
I can not stress any better that there is an HDMI bug with 13.10 and above.
As I stated, complete working 12.10 Quantal.... I had full HDMI and S/PDIF surround sound output with the same motherboard and hardware as in #1249705.

If you remember Raymond that you pointed me to David or Stephen, that was a bust.

Developers..... ! This is a know issue and Must be looked into. It has been almost a year and No One is looking into this.
As I suggested, Get the ALSA and Pulse audio Devs on the sam page or find someone to develope a One Piece Audio Package so there is less fiddling around for the users.
Get this Fixed once and for all so people can enjoy their HTPC.

Thanks and good luck to those of you that have the HDMI issues.

Same issue. It is only an issue with 14.04 Studio though. Ubuntu 14.04 Trusy was working fine with requgalr Ubuntu desktop but GParted wouldnt work with my RAID setup. Reinstalled with 14.04 server and now the disks are back in order thanks to partman. After server was installed I then installed the ubuntu-desktop meta package, followed by the the ubuntustudio-desktop meta package and now I have no HDMI sound.

I will update once I am done unpacking the tarballs from the previous install and am able to reboot.

Update.

So in the Volume Manager settings pane under output devices it shows the device as (Unplugged) and there is no sound. I clicked on the configuration tab, selected "Digital Surround 5.1 Output (HDMI) Output" and i magically had sound again.

My issue was apparently just a failure to navigate the menus properly.

Hopefully this helps.

Thanks Ubuntu!

Regarding command not found for alsa-info.sh, try this:

  cd ~/
  wget http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh -O alsa-info.sh

Then run alsa-info.sh

You will be prompted to upload the information or save it locally. The easiest way to share the information is to automatically upload it to the alsa-project server and copy/paste the address you're given. You can also choose to save the information locally, and alsa-info will output a text file in /tmp . You can then upload that file to whoever wants it. (Remember: files in the /tmp directory will be removed on every reboot.)
