Bug Description

Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

The size of the address book "edit contact" window in Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 does not fit. The window is too tall on my 1280x800 resolution (common on many laptops).

Also, when manually trying to resize the window the border-click to drag the size is seen as a right click on the menu bar and shows options for 'always on top', 'move to window', etc.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Reopening this, as it still occurs in Intrepid with a resolution of 1024x600.

Thunderbird version: 2.0.0.21+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.10.1

Could it be a problem, that I use the Netbook-Remix?

Can you please try disabling any and all extensions and see if you get
the same problem?
What do you mean when you say "Could it be a problem, that I use the
Netbook-Remix?" I'm not sure what Netbook-Remix is. Is it an extension?

This is the Netbook remix I mean: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UNR

I haven't got any extensions enabled, but I just recogonized that I could I resize this window at the top border while at the bottom border the window menu is shown instead.

How to reproduce:
  -> Turn your resolution to a height <= 600
  -> Open the adress book in Thunderbird
  -> Edit a contact

Confirmed on latest jaunty UNR on Eee900 netbook with 1024x600 resolution. The new card dialog box can be resized, but since the controls don't scale with the resize, it doesn't do much good. Workaround is to alt-click the window and drag it around until you can get to the spots you need.

ok let me clear up the last post i made.
Uwe L. Korn:

What i wanted to say is does it only happen on netbook remix. I had
found out a day or 3 before that post on what it was. I am unable to
reproduce this in Intrepid or Jaunty version 2.0.0.21 and 3.0 my
resolution is set to 1400x1050 using nvidia-glx-173.
Can anyone confirm that it is the same drivers each of you have when you
are able to reproduce it?

The original report had the problem in 1024x800 resolution, so unlikely that was a netbook. The problem is that the dialog box for new card is too large (tall) to fit in any of the lower resolutions such as Nx800, Nx600 (and yes, we have some new systems that have even smaller screens than that, such as Nx400). Without the ability for that window to scale down that small and/or have scrollbars, it is difficult to use it.

Also a problem on Acer Aspire One AOA-150 with Xubuntu (not netbook remix). This machine also has 1024x600 resolution.

I confirm the bug on Aspire One 1024x600 with Ubuntu 9.04. No workarounds, ALT+click can be applied only on the title bar, but the window can't be moved upward.
When I need to insert a new contact, I just press enter when finished (without seeing the full data on the window)

I'm having the same problem. Using Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 on the Acer Aspire One, the resolution is standard set on max 1024x600.
I noticed the problem in a few programs already, Korganizer amongs them when hitting the 'settings-configure korganizer' buttons.
 If i recall well i used to be able to click alt+leftpad on the other ubuntu version(9.04) but 9.10 stays stuck at the top panel. Resize gets the 'sortof' the buttom up but when you click 'ok' or 'apply' it just jumps away again, no results.
Theres go to be a sollution. A fit-screen right click or move?? !!! or what about creating a workspace underneath, may i can click it then...i'll try that!
 PS: F11 only works in firefox, and alt-tab works but you cant see whether you click ok or cancel...

Ok workspace underneath didnt work, the too-big-of-a-window seems to block the whole row of workspaces underneath. Interesting!

Can anyone with the special low resolution notebooks confirm if the following fixes the issue?

1. extract the messenger.jar file of thunderbird applicaiton
unzip /usr/share/thunderbird/chrome/messenger.jar

2. add the following lines at the end of the file ./content/messenger/messenger.css

#abcardDialog { min-width: 650px; }
#abcardDialog > .dialog-content-box { overflow: auto; }

3. recreate the jar file:
zip -r messenger.jar content

4. copy back to original app location:

$ sudo cp messenger.jar /usr/share/thunderbird/chrome/messenger.jar

5. relaunch thunderbird. The dialog window for new/edit cards should fit within the desktop screen and vertical scrollbar should appear to allow editing of all data fields.

I can confirm the problem exists on a Toshiba NB200, resolution 1024x600, with UNR 9.04 Jaunty.
I can also confirm that the fix posted above solves the problem. Many thanks for posting that, Cesar - it makes Thunderbird a viable app on the limited screen of my netbook.

No. The problem seems fixed in 10.04 LTS. Can't vouch for later versions, though - I haven't moved on, yet.
