Bug Description

On 14.04 I am getting an issue on my Thinkpad T520 where running the "proprietary, tested" 331.38 driver causes my display to hang. It seems to stay that way until I switch to tty6 with ctrl+alt+f6 and then back to tty7 which has the display, this causes it to un-hang. This then happens back and forth. I am not sure but it might be triggered by clicking things, opening windows and such. The problem disappears when switching back to the open source driver.

Should I try an even newer driver from nvidia, or is there any more information you need for troubleshooting?

Hi, i have the identical issue as Lagre.
Sometimes the dysplay freeze, and to unfreeze it I have to switch to ctrl+alt+f1 and then return to ctrl+alt+f7.
I have Nvidia Geforce 740M display adapter and quite the same specification as Lagre:

DistroRelease: UbuntuStudio 14.04
Package: nvidia-331 331.38-0ubuntu7
Architecture: amd64
CurrentDesktop: XFCE

Hope someone can fix this.

I have the same issue here. It only happens when using the NVidia display driver.

I get this in Kern.log when it happens:

I have the same issue using Nvidia (proprietary, tested) driver 331.38 on my HP Envy using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, kernel 3.13.0-32-generic x86_64.
I also switch to a console using ctrl+alt+f[1-6] and then back to ctrl-alt+f7 and all works for a short time then it happens again.

I don't know if it works, I just change it and I am waiting to see if that solves the problem

Hello, I have similar issues on a Toshiba Satellite notebook running Trusty 14.04 x64 and a Nvidia 540M GPU (Optimus with another on-board Intel HD).

Using 331.38 or 331.38 updates causes a freeze at the end of the splash screen shown during reboot. The Unity Greeter is never shown and the only way to regain control is to revert to console, purge all nvidia packages and use the Nouveau driver.

There is nothing out of ordinary in Xorg.log. It seems to load the driver. Last lines in the log are:

The freeze on the boot splash screen happens also with the latest nvidia drivers from xorg-edgers (343.22). It also worked fine for a few months and if I remember correctly it started to do it after an Ubuntu software update. I don't know which one caused it though.

Hi, I have same issue on MSI CX61 2OD with Nvidia Geforce 740M, Ubuntu 14.04 64 bits, driver 331.38 (both tested and updates versions). Display hangs randomly when video is set to use Nvidia GPU, but it works fine when switched to Intel GPU.

Same problem as described for me as well

Display freezes, often within 1 minute of start up. (using menus seems most dangerous)

Only when using 331.38 ( +update)

works fine with Intel power savings mode (still using Nvidia drivers - settings within Nvidia X server settings)
ubuntu 14.4
Nvidia Gforce GT750M

I can confirm that I only have the same problem when using "Nvidia binary driver - version 331.38 from 331 updates". After switching to tested (instead of with updates), it works fine.

Xubuntu 14.4 bits
Nvidia GeForce 610M

I'm using Ubuntu 14.10 64bit with nvidia binary driver 331.113 from nvidia-updates.
My system is a Tuxedo Book XC1702 with Intel HD Graphics 4600. Desktop is Ubuntu standard (Unity)
