hud and dash don't take keyboard input

Hud and dash (key <Alt> or key <Super>) appear correctly, can also be closed with the same key, but I can't type anything. Sometimes one or two letters can be entered (if I'm fast), but any further input does absolutely nothing.

I've seen a bug related to ibus with same symptoms, but that one is fixed (and my problem is not). Further I selected scim with im-config, so ibus should not be running at all (but I see ibus related processes on my system). Killing those does not solve the problem. SCIM is running (but not activated), but killing it does not make hud or dash accept keyboard input either. -- I see no other keyboard related problem.

It doesn't sound like a HUD backend issue here, so I'm re-assigning to unity so someone who understands the UI side of things can look at it.
