unity desktop missing

I was trying to get wallch to function in ubuntu 14.04. The system locked up and I had to reboot. After rebooting, the unity desktop no longer had a launch bar or a menu bar at the top of the screen. There is no way to launch any programs or to log out or shut down without doing a reset. Is there a way I can fix the unity desktop?
