Bug Description

I was in the process of doing an upgrade from 13.10 to 14.04 when the cgroup-lite setup failed.
The Software Updater application warned that the system might not start correctly, but I was able to reboot (except for another warning about cgroup-lite, offering to submit this report).

Thanks for submitting this bug. Could you please attach the /var/log/upstart/cgroup-lite.log file?

There is no log file there for cgroup-lite (although there are plenty of other logs in the /var/log/upstart directory). I did manage to clear the matter up by going into synaptic and doing a reinstall, but I wouldn't expect that to delete old log files.

The most interesting part of the apttermlog is:

initctl: Unable to connect to Upstart: Failed to connect to socket /com/ubuntu/upstart: Connection refused
invoke-rc.d: unknown initscript, /etc/init.d/cgroup-lite not found.

It appears as though upstart was not running while cgroup was trying to start.

I'm marking this as also affecting upstart, though I suspect it's a packaging issue in cgroup-lite somehow. But hopefully James can figure out what cgroup-lite is doing wrong.

Hi Serge,

The problem I believe is that Upstart is in the process of restarting so initctl cannot (yet) reconnect to Upstart until it has finished the re-exec. See comment #7 on bug 901038.
