Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.15 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

kernel-bug-exists-upstream

Just tried 13.5-rc1-trusty and the problem persists.

Transferred a 2.1 GB file to the same USB drive, transfer started at 50Mb/s, was down to 20 Mb/s after 1/3, to 11 Mb/s after 1/2 and finished at 6.2 Mb/s and staid there completed for over 5 minutes before the dialog closed.

Ubuntu-QC-1, what would be the earliest Ubuntu release you personally used that demonstrates this problem?

I'm afraid I cannot say with any precision, but this is not recent.

I noticed this slowness from Ubuntu 13.04 onwards. 12.04 was a lot better though no speed demon. From 13.04 to 14.04 the transfer starts more or less ok and then slows, almost stops dropping down to about 600kb/s, then speeds up again to about 3 mb/s flucuating up and down from 1.2 mb/s to 3 mb/s. Sometimes, it holds around 4 to 5 mb/s when it "behaves" better.

I have also seen it stop just before 100% transfer, hang around for up to about 30 seconds before completing the write.

Orionds, thank you for your comment. So your hardware and problem may be tracked, could you please file a new report with Ubuntu by executing the following in a terminal while booted into a Ubuntu repository kernel (not a mainline one) via:
ubuntu-bug linux

Ubuntu-QC-1, for regression testing purposes, could you please test 12.04.0 via http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04.0/ and advise to the results?
