Bug Description

I have noticed that PIXZ is available in 13.04 Raring at earliest, but the versions between 12.04 and 14.04 [Quantal, Raring, Saucy] are all non-LTS, and we'd not install a non-LTS on a long-running Server. XZ is awesome, but single-threaded operation is quite big no-no, Precise still has a long road for support ahead, and I'd rather not compile any package myself on my level, so we'd appreciate releasing PIXZ for Precise.

FWIW, the packages regarding XZ and PIXZ are rather old in Precise's repos, same for all Ubuntu versions before 14.04.

Noticed I mistyped the name in the title: PIZA -> PIXZ

Trusty and Xenial LTS are available for you now and they have pixz. Does that solve your problem?

There's very little chance of pixz hitting precise.

summary: - PIZA to 12.04 ?
+ PIXZ to 12.04 ?

There's currently no package for pixz in any of the PPA, either.

Our computer is still running 12.04. Although it means doing everything from beginning, I'd prefer to do a clean install of 16.04.

You are aware that you have less than a year of life left on precise?

BTW, more recent versions of xz (5.2 and later) now have support for multiple cores built-in -> bug 1493999

It was an easy backport, so I compiled trusty pixz for you, have a look in my stable release PPA.

If it's similar smooth sailing, I'll see about backporting the yakkety version as well.

As such, I'll close this ticket as fixed even if the package did not make it to official precise.

No problem, the computer I'm running 12.04 on will go down real soon.

"No problem"? Sounds like I owed you something that I didn't deliver. Oh well...

I meant having under a year left in 12.04 is no problem. Going down wasn't planned.
