update-motd unexpected operator on development version check

Bug Description

Error appears upon console login after installing from Trusty server iso 2014-apr-11:
/etc/update-motd.d/91-release-upgrade: 4: [: =: unexpected operator

Field 4 doesn't exist in this expression:
if [ $(lsb_release -sd | cut -d" " -f4) = "(development" ]; then

rbeisner@isotest0:/etc/update-motd.d$ lsb_release -sd
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
