gthumb does not recognize ptp-cameras

uname -a: Linux nx7300 3.11-2-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.11.8-1 (2013-11-13) x86_64 GNU/Linux
gthumb: 3.0.1
When trying to import data from ptp-cameras, gthumb does not take any notice from them.
"shotwell" as well as "darktable" indeed are able to work with ptp-cameras.
It doesn't matter if you connect first the device to the computer and start gthumb afterwards or vice versa.
How to reproduce: Always starting gthumb
