Bug Description

Binary package hint: kmix

Using KDE 3.5.7 on Feisty.
I usually use multimedia keys of my keyboard, they work thanks to kmilo daemon.
When i press mute key, the Mute on message appears as you can view in image i attach
but every sounds and music continue sounding.
In addiction, Mute feature of kdetv program doesn't works, may be there are relation between both things.
This also happen in Debian testing.

This bug is related to alsa and your sound card driver, not kdemultimedia.
You may not be able to mute the pcm channel in alsamixer too...

I have Sound Blaster PCI 64, using Ubuntu or Debian with Gnome, mute function works perfectly.
¿Why works in Gnome but not in KDE?

I can confirm the same thing happens on my Toshiba Satellite A200 1GB, running Kubuntu gutsy. When I press the Fn+Mute keys the on-screen displays shows "Mute on", but the sound isn't turned off. Right click on the taskbar icon -> Mute doesn't work either. KMix shows no "Mute" buttons above the channel volume sliders, nor does alsamixer have the mute control for any of the channels.

tjgq@lisa:~$ lspci | grep Audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
01:00.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc Unknown device aa08

Is there anything we can do? Maybe prodding upstream for an updated ALSA driver?

I think the problem is in alsa, alsamixer has not mute option for Master channel.
Then kmix has not mute option for Master channel.
When i press mute key, it tries to mute Master, by that, sound card does not mute.
I have a solution for my case, it is making a script that mutes PCM and Line channels when is run, and next time it is run, it unmutes PCM and Line channel (using amixer command). There is to configure KDE to run this script when mute key is pressed in kcontrol.

There is ongoing effort to provide a virtual master for each driver. You likely need to erase your /var/lib/alsa/asound.state and forcibly reload the ^snd modules in current 8.10.
