Bug Description

After upgrading to to Gutsy, Kubuntu no longer automounts my USB flash drives. The device shows up as sdb1 from fdisk. Dmesg reports the following:

I'm using latest Kubuntu Gutsy and automount was totally broken a few days ago. It used to work just fine then I saw some new KDE packages with comments like this one:

kdebase (4:3.5.7-1ubuntu14)
 Drop kubuntu_73_nomediaioslave_mounthelper.diff, kubuntu_76_kickermedia.diff and kubuntu_83_media_desktop.diff:
as it's been decided to switch back to the standard media:/
protocol, as /media create as many problems as it resolves...

After that, automount was totally broken. I get a new device in /dev but no popup and nothing in /media or media:/. I can mount the usb devices manually though but I would like my automount back :)

Note that it is switch back to media:/ but if I type media:/ in Kubuntu, it says that KDE media manager is currently disabled.

My bad: I realized that automount wasn't working because I killed kded. I have to kill it because it sometimes eats all my cpu. I'll open another bug report for this or see if someone else reported the same problem.

My problem is very similar to yours when you have kded off. The only differences are that I have kded running, and media:/ shows all of my drives, except any flash drives I have plugged in. However, like you, I do get a new device in /dev and no popup.

Perhaps this isn't a bug, just something I broke, but I'm not sure what I could have done to break it. It seemed to stop working right after I installed Gutsy.

Same problem here.
Since the last update, automount doesn't work anymore.
I'm using gnome, so i think the problem relies at udev or hal?

We have a similar problem https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/130502 and http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=516814 there is even a feisty occurrence here, http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=519267

This is definitely confirmed, even if it only a small number of cases.

They had this problem in Fedora Core 7, and they used http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showpost.php?p=840424&postcount=61 as a solution. I don't know if this helps, as I don't seem to have the file they refer to.

Hopefully we'll be able to get some helps soon.

Just confirming that the issue is on my laptop too.

Recent upgrades have broken it.

I just wanted to inform everybody, that everything worked for me again after a fresh reinstall of gutsy (tribe 4, and all upgrades till today).
But this shouldn't be the solution?!

Well, I did a clean install of Tribe 4, fixed everything. Now apparently Tribe 5 breaks it again? What's going on here?

I've just had to do another reinstall from my Tribe 5 CD. Last time I did one everything was awesome, this time back to the old no automounting issue!

I confirm this, Gutsy KDE automount doesn't work and media manager is disabled (that's what media:/ says..)

Olivier (olivier-lacroix) wrote :

I can confirm this on my kubuntu Gutsy, after doing a fresh install of the beta version.

As far as I am conserned, this error is reported by kio_media_mounthelper in a popup window when I try to mount it, either by double click or via the right click :

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error

after doing so, 2 lines appear in the syslog :

[23231.464000] UDF-fs: No partition found (1)
[23231.508000] Unable to identify CD-ROM format.

which is pretty strange... as I am trying to mount an usb key....

it seems to me that the kio-thing fails to recognize the file format.

mounting as root works well and everything was OK in feisty.

Do you guys think this is the same problem ? As nobody spoke about kio_media_mounthelper, I am not sure...

This bug is really annoying, as automounting is a really basic but useful feature.

feel free to ask for any debug output.

I solved my problem : having installed ubuntu from an usb key, there was a CD-ROM entry /dev/sdb1 in my fstab, which is the usual reference of any external device I might plug.

Good luck with your problem.

Wow, gladly stumbled upon this after doing a clean install from Feisty using a usb key

Olivier's solution worked perfectly. All USB drives work once again!

Note: also changed my cdrom drive back to '/media/cdrom0'

Is this still an issue since Gutsy 7.10 came out? Sounds from the comments like it was a beta (Tribe 5) issue. If the issue still exist, we can mark it confirmed and assign it a package, which would help it get fixed. Otherwise we can mark it invalid and clean up Launchpad a bit :-)

Gutsy and Feisty reached EOL and are not supported anymore.

Is it still an issue using Hardy, Intrepid or Jaunty?
