Bug Description

I am using ubuntu 14.04 64-bit. (All my packages were up-to-date as of about 1 week ago.) My hardware is an Acer C720 (Intel graphics). The symptoms of the problem is the display completely stops updating, except the mouse cursor continues to move. Clicking and any keypresses have no effect. The system remains in this state for about 15-60 seconds, then it recovers and goes back to normal.

The problem most commonly happens when using chrome or chromium to do any kind of intesive hardware-accelerated rendering. Typically a youtube video or and HTML5 game with lots of animations. The problem tends to happen during periods of high CPU usage.

Ivan Matyunin, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Changing to linux (Ubuntu) as per your https://launchpadlibrarian.net/169966539/dmesg.txt :
WARNING: CPU: 0 PID: 3224 at /build/buildd/linux-3.13.0/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_uncore.c:125 gen6_gt_check_fifodbg.isra.9+0x38/0x50 [i915]()

Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.14-rc7

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

Hi Christopher,

I have tested this with the latest upstream kernel per your instructions. I was able to reproduce the same error. Please let me know if there's any other information I can provide or anything else I can do to help.

Ivan Matyunin, as per your https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1294391/+attachment/4031369/+files/dmesg.txt :
[ 1241.220427] [drm] GPU crash dump saved to /sys/class/drm/card0/error
[ 1241.220429] [drm] GPU hangs can indicate a bug anywhere in the entire gfx stack, including userspace.
[ 1241.220431] [drm] Please file a _new_ bug report on bugs.freedesktop.org against DRI -> DRM/Intel
[ 1241.220432] [drm] drm/i915 developers can then reassign to the right component if it's not a kernel issue.
[ 1241.220434] [drm] The gpu crash dump is required to analyze gpu hangs, so please always attach it.

Hence, could you please file a new report as noted, and post the URL of your new report?
