Bug Description

[Impact]

Users having the Launcher only on a monitor that is not the left-most monitor can only open the application once. This can lead to much frustration and a restart of the system in order to open the application again using the Launcher.

[Test Case]

* Have a multi-monitor setup.
* Using System Settings, go to Displays.
* Under General options, click the drop down for Launcher placement and select the right-most monitor.
* Click an icon to open a application. Close that application and click the icon again.
* The application should open again with this fix.

[Regression Potential]

None identified.

Original Description:

In Trusty:

On a dual monitor system with the launcher on the right hand screen, an application that has been "locked to launcher", (including those there by default) can only be clicked on once per session to actually launch the application. After that it's unresponsive to clicks, although right-click actions work.

Seems to affect all apps, including "Files".

To repeat, for any application not already on the launcher bar:

Launch the application using the dash.

Right-click on its launcher icon and select "Lock to Launcher"

Quit the application.

Click on its launcher icon. It should launch again.

Quit it again.

Click on its launcher icon again. It won't work this time. It looks like dragging would work, but its operation as a launcher will not.

NB: I haven't installed any hacks eg: click-to-minimise. Seen this on two systems upgraded from saucy to trusty. (One with AMD graphics, one with Intel, so I doubt that's relevant either.)

In case anyone ever looks at this, I thought I'd describe how to repeat the issue more simply, though it was implied in the above.

As default, there is a launcher icon for "Files" at the top of the launcher, under the Ubuntu logo.

Click on it once. Nautilus launches showing the home folder.

Close that window.

Click on the "Files" icon again.

... nothing.

This seems to only affect upgrades from Saucy - even if the Saucy install itself was unmodified from default (as in the case on this machine, installed only briefly to upgrade to Trusty with).

Clearing all likely gnome/unity config has also cleared this problem.

OK, I think I found out what this is about. Can reliably repeat it now.

It's about having multiple monitors. I have three. This problem occurs if I set the launcher placement to be anything other than "All Displays" or the leftmost display.

(Confirmed by swapping displays around in the display prefs; whichever one is spacially positioned leftmost is fine; if the launcher is on (and only on) any other display, this issue occurs.)

But I want my launcher in the middle! :-) Situation here is that the middle display is a 27" 2560x1440, and the two on either side are 24" 1920x1080. Having just one launcher on that big middle screen, and pushing new windows from there to the outer displays at need, works well for me, and of course ought to be a supported choice, as the UI lets me do it. ;-)

Of course what I really really really want is the launcher on auto-hide along the bottom of every display, but that's not going to happen. :-(

Hey, is anyone actually seeing this? I haven't even had a bot come by and ask for more information...

Seems to be a rather serious bug, I wonder why more are not seeing it. Perhaps it is an upgrade issue.

Can you confirm my finding of my last comment, that is:

This happens when the launcher is only on one display of a multi-display desktop, and when that isn't the left-most display?

Revision history for this message
Colin Law (colin-law) wrote :

Yes, well spotted, for me it only happens when the launcher is on the right hand display of a pair. That explains why it is not seen by more users.

Also it is not to do with having upgraded from 13.10 as I also see it with a separate install of 14.04 on a different partition on the same machine which was installed as an early beta and has been updated from there.

This was observed with both a RadeonHD 7750 and Intel HD4600; both using stock opensource drivers/mesa et al. Two separate machines, btw. I'm afraid I sold my nVidia card that I used to use, but the fact those can't drive more than 2 monitors at once means I wouldn't have chosen the configuration that revealed it in the first place (ie: wanting launcher only on middle of three monitors). I suppose it's possible that nVidia's TwinView may be having an effect, if it means the logic of how it handles multi-monitor is reflected up at the levels at which Launcher is coded. (In that case Nouveau might show it.) But remember from earlier observations: this only occurs if the launcher is placed on one screen, not all of them, and that the screen it's placed on is *not* the one on the left.

Is clearly a bug :-) Can't possibly be a design feature a: that the launcher behaves differently on different monitors of a multi-monitor setup, and b: that it works correctly exactly once per session. *Never* working would at least imply malign design choice! ;-)

Also, it didn't happen in Saucy. I'd had that Launcher-in-the-middle config for some time before the upgrade to Trusty beta.

Same here. Fresh install of 14.04 64-bit, dual monitor setup. When I set the launcher to only display on one monitor, I can only click each icon in the launcher once. Trying to interact with those icons a second time receives no response.

If I then set launcher to display on both monitors, I immediately regain access to all icons in the launcher on both monitors.

I can confirm it does appear to be working as expected now, yes. Confirmed also it stays fixed after logging out and logging into a fresh session after making the config change. So my preferred config of the launcher on the middle display only, apps can be launched more than once. :-)

(NB: Applied all pending trusty-proposed updates rather than trying to cherry pick those that might relate to this. All seems well.)

Thanks Alex,

That is exactly the setup... Have laptop and monitor for extended desktop, with monitor as primary and on RIGHT-SIDE. The launcher is on the primary monitor(right-side), and encounters the problem. Sorry, I did not think to experiment with putting the Launcher on the laptop... would have lived with that... I backed out of the 14.04 and went back to 13.10... was concerned that if such a bug was discovered right out-of-the-box, what other surprises might be awaiting... decided to allow others to discover..

Perhaps I may update to 14.04 again and observe your suggested work-around.

Thanks again...
