Bug Description

Did the upgrade from 13.10 to 14.04 yesterday (9-mar-2014). After that, desktop behaviour was strange. I realized that the graphics driver chose the strange resolution for both my display (as DVI-0, std resolution = 1680x1050) and the tv screen on VGA-0 (std resolution = 1920x1080). When i turn on the tv set, graphics driver switches to resoltion 1280x1024.
It is not possible to set the position relatively to each other. It always says 'absolute'. One time it was not possible to 'de-unify' the screens. So i experience a lot of strange behaviour.
My graphics card is a Radeon 3100.
I think base problem is, that the ati-driver cannot be loaded. fglrx driver, can't be loaded, either. But fglrx quit support for my card some time ago. Until 13.04 the radeon driver was working very fine.

Hi Hans-Peter,

do you know https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver ?

And please run from a terminal window:

sudo apport-collect 1290232

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

That's odd. Do you have xserver-xorg-video-all package installed?

Hi Jörg,

I removed the ati-driver and did a fresh install. After reboot the driver was working well (Blur effect was on, for example). When I plugged the TV screen into the card, resolution somehow messed up, but I was able to start the Display Configuration in System Settings. I did all the adjustments and applied them. The accept dialog did not accept anything and the screen was frozen. It did not revert to the old settings, too. So I killed the X process and after that, it came up nicely and this is what I have till now. If you want to, I'll keep an eye on iy and report into this bug.

regards,
Hans-Peter

BTW: the upgrade to 14.04 was not smooth. It stalled and I had to issue dpkg --configure all manually. Maybe the graphics driver thing is a result of this.

Hi

I did a reboot with the tv set on and everything was working fine. But then I turned off the tv set. It seems as if the gui hasn't noticed that. I can drag windows out of the display screen to where the tv screen is configured.

regards
Hans-Peter
