Bug Description

I had been using GWC Tech's usb sound card http://www.gwctech.com/ebproductdetail.asp?id=86 and it was working fine in dapper drake, but once I upgraded to edgy eft, it only works partially. Namely, I can listen to CD's and music from Rhythmbox, and other gnome based multimedia applications, that I have, and I can record my voice, but I do not hear any system sounds nor I hear any music from JuK, or Amarok. I have not tried other applications.

I happen to like Ubuntu's system sounds, especially the login sound. So, it is a shame.

I thought it is because it was an online upgrade, so I also clean-installed edgy eft, but it was the same situation. When I upgraded to feisty fawn, I was hoping that it would resolve by itself, but it didn't.

I posted about this on the forum, but it did not get resolved. I also mentioned this in the mailing list, and the conclusion was that I should report this as a bug. It's been a while, though.

As I say in the forum and mailing list, I cannot choose anything but the USB Audio in the System->Setting->Sound. Default Mixer Track(?) is also USB Audio (Alsa mixer) only.

Neither Edgy (6.10) nor Feisty (7.04) have dmix & dsnoop enabled by default for usb audio. You need to create an asoundrc or try a Gusty (7.10) Tribe 3 CD.

I created the ~/.asoundrc file and /etc/asound.conf file and it is partially working more. I now have login and logout sound, and also sound for opening applications. I still do not have sound for JuK. Probably, I need to still tweak the configuration for this.

Here is my /proc/asound/cards:

 1 [Audio ]: USB-Audio - USB Audio
                         USB Audio at usb-0000:00:1d.1-2, full speed

Since the first number is 1, I created ~/.asoundrc like this:

pcm.!default {
type hw
card 1
}

ctl.!default {
type hw
card 1
}

And the /etc/asound.conf like so:

pcm.card1 {
    type hw
    card 1
}
ctl.card1 {
    type hw
    card 1
}

Thank you.

is this fix pre asoundconf?

ie are the changes above to ~/.asoundrc to add
pcm.!default {
type hw
card 1
}

ctl.!default {
type hw
card 1
}

the precursor to just using:
asoundconf set-default-card <blah>
?

The 18 month support period for Edgy Eft 6.10 has reached it's end of life. As a result, we are closing the linux-source-2.6.17 Edgy Eft kernel task. However, can you confirm if this issue still exists in the Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS release? If so, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha2 is also scheduled for release today. It will appear at the following when available: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha2 . It contains the the actively developed 2.6.26 Ubuntu kernel. It would be great if you could test this upcoming release via a LiveCD and verify if the issue still exists. If so, please include the appropriate debugging information as outlined at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems . Thanks in advance.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
