HAL fails to initialize after logout and subsequent login

Bug Description

Computer: Gateway MX6920 Laptop
Distro: 7.04 Feisty Fawn

After waking the laptop from standby mode and unlocking the screen, the wireless network connection won't reinitialize to the network it was connected to before going into standby. I tried logging out and logging back in, at which time I received the error:

Internal Error

failed to initialize HAL!

A USB thumb drive formatted with FAT32 was inserted the whole time, but this happens often enough even when there's no external drive plugged in.
