Bug Description

Version: mediaplayer-app 0.20.5+14.04.20140213-0ubuntu1 on Trusty daily.

Trying to play video files in my system I get the following error in the console:

"Your GStreamer installation is missing a plug-in."

Only .ogg files are played correctly.

I have tried mp4, avi, mkv (all of them play correctly in Totem)

I can play all of these types on my machine with the mediaplayer. I'm guessing it's a codec issue. Perhaps you don't have the proper gstreamer codecs installed? But not sure why it would work in totem and not mediaplayer-app. Here is the list of gstreamer packages I have installed. I think you need to make sure you have the -bad and -ugly. We are moving to gstreamer-1.0 once the qt5.2 stuff lands, so the gstreamer-0.10 won't be needed anymore.

I have only installed 1.0 versions of them, maybe that's why it works in Totem and not in mediaplayer:

once the qt5.2 transition happens everything should correctly use gstreamer-1.0. the current version in the archive uses gstreamer-0.1
